Choose fun together

By Published On: May 3rd, 2024

My friend Pete Bombaci has been in my life for as long as I can remember.

More accurately, we met in the mid-1980s at Western University, probably not in class (I learned to go to those, though!), but more likely at a social event!

The way he connects so easily with people, it’s no wonder he’s taken up his mission to make the world a happier and healthier place through human connection.

We have many mutual friends and shared interests.

We choose fun together.

Still, the thread that has continued to weave our lives together all these years is our value and belief in the power of community—him with The GenWell Project, me with play, and together with RED January.

That’s because there is a strong correlation between inactivity and loneliness.

Research from 2021 suggests that over 50% of Canadians feel lonely regularly, and 77% of those with poor self-rated physical health are lonely.

This weekend, May 3rd-5th, is the marquee “GenWell Weekend,” the event that started his Canadian-led (now global) campaign to encourage people to call up a friend, neighbour, co-worker, or family member and use the power of connection to beat social isolation.

How?

Take the beauty of a walk and talk, for example.

When walking next to someone, a conversation becomes parallel play.

A 20-minute walk with someone can boost social, physical, and mental well-being.

Children and adults can gain mood-boosting benefits and improve brain function and cognition while helping to lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and colon cancer and boost the immune system.

Pete and I are planning big things for our “walk and talk” RED January 2025 Canadian campaign. If you or your company want to become a sponsor or partner of RED, we’d love to talk to you.

In the meantime, with May shining the light on our Mental Health, Moms, and play, I hope you’ll sign up for free and join in on the Genwell weekend.

I’ll be meeting my friends in High Park for a walk and talk.

How about you?

Play on!

Your friend & coach,

Janet
