Choosing Change: How Small Daily Shifts Can Transform Your Health and Life After 50
Ever since I can remember, I’ve been someone who embraces change.
My room decor. My Mom couldn’t keep up!
My hair. It was the 80’s, after all.
My life path. I went to three different high schools… on purpose.
Staying the same never felt safe to me.
It felt boring. Stale. Stagnant.
Change? That’s when I felt alive.
I trusted that if something didn’t work out… I’d figure it out. What was the worst that could happen?
30 years ago this month, Shawn and I packed up our lives in Toronto, along with our 8-month-old baby, Meredith, and moved to Amsterdam.
The move across the ocean didn’t feel reckless, despite what people in my life thought. The change felt like a natural extension of who I already was.
Other people called our move to Europe brave. Many friends said, “You’re crazy… I could never do that.”
And in many ways, they were right, because the move wasn’t just a change in geography.
I walked away from an 8-year career in television sports.
I stepped fully into motherhood.
I let go of who I had been… without knowing exactly who I was becoming.
Ultimately, we stayed in Europe for 5 years and moved back to Toronto.
But our adventure reinforced the importance of stepping into the unknown and choosing.
Choosing the version of me I hadn’t met yet.
My life experiences have taught me that when you are ready, willing and able to change, your life can expand in the most incredible ways.
So, I’m curious, where in your life are you staying the same… not because you want to, but because it feels safer?
What would one small, intentional change look like this week?
Not dramatic.
Not perfect.
Just different.
That’s how it starts.
Here’s what I know for sure. You never really know what kind of person you’ll end up being.
But you do get to decide if you’re willing to find out.
And that only happens when you choose change.
Not once, but in small ways, every day.
Because change isn’t something that happens to you, it’s something you practice.
Play on!
Your friend and coach,
