How Change Really Works

How change really works

I recently attended the Canadian Association of Professional Speakers (CAPS) conference in Halifax and met some incredible people.
Storytellers, leaders, change-makers.
But one line, from CAPS President Mark Black, who survived a double lung and heart transplant, stopped me in my tracks.  He said:

“If we believe it’s worth it, we can do just about anything.”

And it hit me… because it’s the truth about change most of us forget. It’s why change feels really hard.

We tell ourselves that changing our health habits should be simple:

  1. Decide.
  2. Do it.
  3. Maintain it forever.
But real human behaviour? It’s messier, much more honest, and happens in stages, sometimes for YEARS.

Here’s how change really works:

  • “I’m fine. I don’t need to change.”
  • “Okay… maybe something needs to shift.”
  • “I’m thinking about doing something.”
  • “I’m trying… inconsistently.”
  • “I figured out what fits my life.”
Here’s the kicker: Most people spend so much time winding in the land of good intentions that they never step into real action.
Not because they’re weak.
Not because they aren’t disciplined.
But because the plans they make don’t match the lives they actually live.

So with Christmas coming and a shiny new year on the horizon, instead of asking, “Why can’t I just stick to it?”

Ask: “What version of this change would actually fit the life I’m living right now?”

That one question gently moves you, from thinking about it to acting on it, sustainably, not punishing.  For example:

• An intentional walk outside after lunch to clear your head. (Exercise)
• Adding one extra fruit or veggie to whatever you were already eating. (Nutrition)
• A joyful playlist while you clean (Stress Management)
• A single boundary around your bedtime, like turning off the lights earlier (Sleep)
Because change doesn’t start with willpower.
It starts with awareness.
It deepens with honesty.
It grows through tiny, doable steps.

And it lasts when it feels like something you get to do, not something you have to do.

One honest moment.
One tiny action.
One day at a time.

Finally, you will be living the version of your life you once only dreamed of, because, as Mark said, if we believe it’s worth it, we can do just about anything.
And if you need help making that change finally happen, I’m right here to help you through it.
Nothing worth doing is worth doing alone.
