How to Break Free from Procrastination and Build Healthy Habits
Have you ever procrastinated – known you needed to do something (fill in the blank with anything—like getting your taxes done!) but put it off until later?
But eventually, when you finally tackle that ‘thing,’ you experience a sense of relief, empowerment, and a newfound ability to move forward.
You’re not alone.
My client, Nancy McConnell, is a kind, gregarious, and creative woman who gets things done.
She has been a lifelong believer in making people’s lives easier and keeping things simple. She’s the force behind the 90-year-old family-run Gibson’s dry cleaning business in Toronto.
Ironically, when it came to her health and well-being, she always considered herself the world’s biggest procrastinator.
“I’m a really, really busy person. I’ve always been busy. I do a thousand things at once, but I didn’t feel as physically or mentally strong all the time.”
She knew she wanted to improve her health, but she struggled to take action. Nancy had tried on her own, dabbling in different wellness strategies, but nothing stuck.
It wasn’t a lack of knowledge—Nancy had always considered herself relatively balanced in her lifestyle—but something was missing: a framework, a structure, and accountability.
That’s when she reached out to work together.
Once we discussed what she wanted most when it came to her health, some key challenges Nancy faced were:
- Lack of Consistency: Nancy knew she wanted to improve her health but kept putting off taking real action.
- Overwhelm and No Structure: She had dabbled in different wellness strategies but lacked a clear, personalized framework to follow.
- Mindless Habits: She assumed she was making healthy choices but wasn’t truly aware of key areas like hydration, nutrition, and movement.
- Struggled with Motivation: She needed accountability and daily encouragement to keep her on track.
Instead of the typical all-or-nothing approach to her habits, we focused on incorporating simple strategies.
This mindset shift was a game changer for Nancy, allowing her to make progress without feeling overwhelmed or discouraged.
One of the first habits she wanted to work on was drinking more water, so Nancy tried the elastic band trick. This trick involves placing elastic bands around her water bottle as a reminder to drink enough throughout the day.
This simple yet effective strategy helped her stay hydrated and instilled a habit of tracking her water intake, which eventually carried over into other aspects of her life.
Over the time we worked together, Nancy became more mindful of her habits, more intentional with her time, and more committed to showing up for herself by:
✅ Creating Simple Yet Effective Systems: The elastic band trick for hydration helped Nancy build awareness around small, daily habits, which led to more significant changes.
✅ Committing To Personalized Coaching: Daily support gave her tailored motivation and accountability, helping her stay engaged.
✅ Shifting Her Mindset: Moving from thinking she was healthy to actually becoming intentional about her habits.
✅ Making Movement A Priority: She went from fitting in exercise when she had time to make it a scheduled, non-negotiable part of her day.
✅ Celebrating Her Progress: Instead of focusing on what she wasn’t doing, she learned to appreciate and build on her successes.
The results?
Nancy says “What I valued most was that your coaching wasn’t one-size-fits-all. It was tailored to me—my goals, my needs, my lifestyle. And I realized that coaching wasn’t just about fixing something once and for all. It was about growing, evolving, and returning when I am ready for the next phase.”
Nancy transformed from feeling stuck and scattered to feeling strong, confident, and in control of her health. She now has the tools and mindset to maintain a balanced, active lifestyle—without guilt, stress, or overwhelm.
She broke free from procrastination and built a sustainable, joyful approach to health and movement.
If you’re feeling stuck in your health journey, like Nancy was, remember that you don’t have to figure it out alone. With the right support, you can break through the cycle of procrastination, build healthy habits, and feel stronger in your body and mind.
The best time to start is now.
