How to Build Resilience Through Self-Care
People often ask me how I’ve weathered the storms of life—my own near-death experiences, my husband’s cancer, family mental health challenges, my Dad’s sudden death and my Mom’s dementia.
The truth is, it’s never been just one tactic.
But if I had to name the thread that’s held me together through it all, it would be this: taking care of myself isn’t selfish—it’s essential.
Long before I dove into my profession as a behaviour change (habit-based) health coach, I learned this lesson the hard way.
I was 24, lying on a gurney in the ER after collapsing from internal bleeding during my bachelorette party. I was in the best shape of my life, a runner, vibrant and full of energy—and yet, here I was. The doctor looked me in the eye and said, “You’re young, you’re fit, you’re active. That’s going to help.”
And it did.
I survived surgery, walked down the aisle six weeks later, and never stopped moving forward. I wasn’t certain I could have kids, but in fact, I got to celebrate the miracle of becoming a mom this week, too, with my daughter turning 30.
That health scare changed the course of my life. I knew that if I wanted to live fully—not just survive—I had to treat my health as non-negotiable.
Because when life gets messy (and it always will), your health becomes your anchor.
That’s the philosophy that’s guided my 20+ years in health and wellness, and why I’m so passionate about helping others find their way to deep health—mentally, physically, and emotionally.
When I was invited to contribute to the book Resilient AF Vol. 2, I wrote:
“I’ve learned that we can be more resilient when we take control of our health. We can live life in a playful, grateful, enjoyable way. We can participate fully in life for as long as we’re here.”
That’s what play represents for me—participation. A joyful rebellion against giving up. A way to reconnect with what matters when everything feels heavy.
I’ve seen it in my clients as well. The ones who show up not to “fix” themselves, but to rediscover who they are when they feel strong, rested, and confident.
Deep health is not about rigid workouts or perfect routines. It’s about making choices—small, intentional ones—that build physical capacity, emotional clarity, and inner steadiness.
Resilience isn’t a trait some people have and others don’t. It’s a skill you practice, a transformative power that can empower and make you feel capable.
And the more you nourish yourself, the stronger your resiliency skill becomes.
So if you’re feeling overwhelmed, unmotivated, or stuck, don’t wait for the crisis to teach you what matters.
Start today. Go for a walk. Laugh. Breathe. Reach out to someone you love.
Choose play.
Your future self—the one navigating life’s inevitable curveballs—will thank you.
Play on!
