WHOOP there it is!
I’m married to a techie.
He loves technology, the latest gadgets in the market, and works in the telecommunications industry – heck, he’s been to the Consumer Electronics show for his job for over 30 years.
It’s helpful that he can keep me in the loop of the latest trends, and our home wifi is super fast!
Ever since I started working in the fitness industry 20 years ago, technological progress has exploded.
There have been several excellent products to help people track their health – everything from counting steps to sleep and heart rate, there is a product to suit everyone.
When I first started as a personal trainer in 2001, the market wasn’t very crowded with gadgets – heart rate monitors were pretty much it.
I still use this simple tool with most clients because people can get valuable feedback right away on how hard their heart is working versus how hard they think they are working.
Heart rate is only a small piece of the puzzle, though.
Fast-forward to 2020, wearable technology has exploded, and data is your friend.
Here’s the thing about health. Your body tries hard to live in a homeostasis state. “Homeostasis is the ability to maintain a relatively stable internal state that persists despite changes in the world outside. All living organisms, from plants to puppies to people, must regulate their internal environment to process energy and ultimately survive.” (More on that later.)
So, when my husband, at the beginning of this pandemic, had a friend introduce him to the latest technological fitness tracker called WHOOP, I was intrigued.
WHOOP provides the most in-depth analysis of your health. How?
It continuously tracks heart-rate monitoring, sleep, recovery, and more.
And this data, which used to be provided just to athletes, is available to everyday people.
WHOOP is different than any health tracker I’ve seen before. There are two things I love most:
- It’s clean-lined and simple-looking. There is no screen/display on the band, so it just looks (and feels) like a very comfortable bracelet – looks good on men and women! All your feedback is delivered to you daily on a well-designed app.
- WHOOP knows stuff you never could. My favourite data point it collects is recovery. In the training world, recovery is known as HRV – or heart rate variability. I first learned about HRV tracking several years ago through my continuing education and professional development. Why does HRV matter? It tracks your parasympathetic nervous system to let you know if your body is in a state of homeostasis. As Kristen Holmes, Vice President of Performance at WHOOP says “It helps you understand in real-time the power you possess to intentionally behave in a way that maximizes mental, physical, and emotional potential”.
Holy moly, that is POWERFUL. WHOOP there it is!
What an opportunity to understand each of our enormous power to moderate our behaviours to live better. As a health coach, helping you to change your habits to improve your behaviours is what I love to do!
Wearing this technology has taught me a lot.
Even though I love to play every day, I’ve learned so much because of the feedback about the days my body wants “high strain” and other days my body wants less. I get daily insight into my sleep, food/beverage choices, exercise (play) and recovery, unlike anything else on the market.
WHOOP has changed my life and given me a new perspective on helping my clients get even better health outcomes.
I trust the product so much that I partnered with them and officially became a WHOOP affiliate this week.
Play smarter, not harder. Listen, health is more than six-pack abs. Ultimately, if you like to get feedback about your complete health, the future is bright!
