Why Connection – Not Perfection – Is the Secret to Better Health.

This weekend, I’m speaking on the theme of “Connect” for the Girl Guides of Canada.

And honestly, the word “connect” captures everything I believe about health.

Because health isn’t just about workouts or routines.

It’s about reconnection – with your body, your joy, and the spark inside you that makes you feel alive again.

The thread of connection runs deep through everything I do and in who I am.

Play connects us to ourselves and to others.

It gives us a way to stay grounded when life throws us curveballs.

It reminds us that even small, joyful moments of movement matter.

When we play, we laugh.

When we laugh, we connect.

And when we connect, we heal.

This week marks the 11th year since my Dad died suddenly and the 34th wedding anniversary I get to celebrate with my husband, Shawn.

Both milestones anchor me in the importance of connection.

Losing my Dad taught me how fragile life can be, and I was constantly inspired by the community and friends he built through connection.

Loving Shawn has shown me how steady, joyful connection can carry us through anything (that photo is our engagement photo)!

It’s why I keep coming back to this truth:

When we care for our health, when we move, rest, nourish, and play, we’re not just adding years to our lives.

We’re connecting with ourselves and those who matter most.

So this week, keep it simple: find one playful way to connect with yourself or someone you love.

Take a walk together, send a spontaneous message, dance in the kitchen, or take five quiet minutes to check in with your own body.

Because connection, not perfection, is where real health begins.

Play on!

Your coach and friend,

Jan xo
