You Are Not Done Yet: A Story About Aging, Resilience & Play
In February 1994, I found myself alone in the middle of Norway, in the depths of winter, waiting for the runner to hand me the Olympic torch.
I had happily signed up to be part of the torch relay as part of the CTV Olympic broadcast team.
I mean, come on.
This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
I was standing still… but everything in me was awake.
Cold. Quiet. Uncertain. Hopeful.
Waiting for something to arrive that would remind me why I was there.
And this weekend, the Olympics begin again, and the Super Bowl too.
A global reminder of what the human spirit is capable of—at any age, in any conditions—even when the world feels like it’s spinning out of control.
Every day, every week in fact, we’re given personal and universal reminders about the power of the human spirit.
Like my mom, who turned 95 on Tuesday.
And World Cancer Day on Wednesday, reminding us that progress isn’t just about survival; it’s about the quality of life we make possible.
It makes me think about my clients. Women who whisper fears they rarely say out loud:
- “My body doesn’t feel like it used to.”
- “I’m scared my best days are behind me.”
- “I’ve spent my whole life taking care of everyone else… what if it’s too late for me?”
And here’s what life, and aging, has taught me, up close and personal:
Time is not something to wait out. It’s something to step into.
You don’t need to be fearless.
You don’t need to be fast.
You don’t need to be perfect.
You just need to keep showing up for your life.
Go after the trip
Go after the dream.
Go after the version of yourself who still wants to feel strong, curious, playful, alive.
Because the torch doesn’t arrive when everything is easy.
It arrives when you’re ready to carry it forward anyway.
And you are not done yet.
Play on.
